Mission Statement

The Pacific Grove Feast of Lanterns seeks to enhance the culture, history and heritage of Pacific Grove by providing a weeklong community event for families through civic and cultural activities.

History

Introduced in 1905, by the Methodists and the Women's Civic Club of Pacific Grove as a closing celebration for the Chatagua Assembly, the Feast of Lanterns has grown into a cherished citywide festival.  Organized by a team of over 125 volunteers, many family activities are offered through out the week and culminate in an all day event at Lovers Point Park. That evening members of the Royal Court perform a pageant based on the Legend of the Blue Willow.

THE ROYAL COURT AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The Royal Court consists of young high school women from Pacific Grove who actively contribute their time and energy to their school and hometown. These young ladies spend a good part of their summer visiting nursing homes and the elderly, visiting schools and talking to students, and making community appearances on behalf of the City of Pacific Grove and the Feast of Lanterns.

Many former court members who began their community service with the Feast of Lanterns have continued their involvement in civic activities as adults. Allision Young Bautista, Carol Bradley Lauderdale and Marabee Rush Boone are now current members of the Feast of Lanterns Board. Others often return each year with their families to enjoy the festival, some return to be a part of the pageant cake. Debbie Ying Ling Schugg, a former princess, who signs for the deaf during the evening’s festivities and pageant production.

COMMUNITY CELEBRATION

The Feast of Lanterns is the only annual, week-long celebration in Pacific Grove. It provides fun and enjoyment for all, and offers residents the opportunity to be involved in their hometown. The festival is staffed entirely by volunteers ranging in age from 8 to 90 years. Homes are decorated and parties are planned during the Feast of Lanterns week. It is truly a celebration of community that has something for everyone including our pets at the Pet Parade.
